Termites

The mere sight of "white ants" in our homes can be worrying.

"White ants" or termites are generally divided into subterranean termites, which require contact with soil where they have access to moisture required for their survival and drywood termites, which survive within wood with less moisture content beyond what is provided by the wood or wood digestion ( drywood termite live in the wood they feed on.)

What many consider most destructive to building ( wood structures ) will be the Coptotermes sp. especially Coptptermes gestroi, the Asian subterranean termites.

Termites undergoes incomplete metamorphosis with egg, nymph and adult stages. The caste consists of workers ( the feeder and groomer of the colony ) , soldiers , royals ( King & Queen) ,alates , immature stages.

Singapore also has a high enquiry rate of drywood termites affecting furnishings in homes and offices. The treatment differs from that of subterranean termites.

There is rarely any preventive measures for drywood termites unlike the protection of subterranean termites with professional pre or post construction barrier treatment for buildings.

You will need professional advise on how to approach termites problem if you suspect to have an infestation.

Omnipests team offers no charge for on site consultation for termites problem.

Ever wonder what sounds does termites make when the colony feels threatened?

Play the video to listen to the termite soldiers sending warning signals to the colony!

It is the ticking sound that sounds like electrical current in this video.

Active soldiers of subterranean termites seen in the Above Ground Bait Station.

This is a common stage of the baiting process where higher ratio of soldiers are seen rather than the workers caste.

This also signals a mid to near end stage of the baiting process to get rid of the termite problem that has plagued the home owner.

Drywood Termites  (Crytotermes sp) live in the wood it feeds on.

Unlike Subterranean Termites , drywood termite does not require moisture. And because of this, they are found in mostly in wood furnishings such as cabinets , doors , door frames and shelves. On average , Omnipests receives about 2 to 3 cases of drywood termites problems per month and treat the problem with injection of termiticide directly into the source of the infestation.

The picture shows the droppings or pellets , known as frass ,of the drywood termite. The frass are symmetrical in shape and feels dry and hard. This is a sure sign of a drywood termite infestation if you spot these around your wooden fixtures.

It is best to seek advise if you are not sure if not sure what kind of wood boring insects you have as there a few species of wood boring insects found in Singapore
